Today I met Henk on a bridge in Amsterdam. He was doing his daily bike ride. He follows the same route every day. He always stops on this particular bridge and sits on a bench nearby for a while to enjoy the view. He’s a well known face here and many people stopped to say hi while I was talking to him.
Henk grew up in the Jordaan area, originally a working-class neighbourhood, but now one of the most expensive, upscale locations in Amsterdam. Henk longs for the old days sometimes. The atmosphere has changed, now the typical Jordanese culture has become a tourist attraction.
Henk told me he used to be a plasterer. The ring he wears he won when he became the Dutch Champion, so he was a good one too!
